Building an AI Chatbot That Understands Hindi and HinglishAI Automation
Summary: Many Indian customers switch between Hindi and English in a single message. Modern AI models handle this well — if the chatbot is designed around real customer questions. Here is what to plan for.

A customer in Lucknow types, "Bhai delivery kab tak hogi, order kal kiya tha." A customer in Pune writes, "What is the price for 2BHK, kitna token amount?" If your chatbot only understands formal English, both people leave frustrated. The good news is that today's large language models handle Hindi, Hinglish and several Indian languages far better than older keyword bots ever did.

Start with real conversations

Export a few hundred real chats or call notes. Group them into intents: price, availability, delivery, refund, location, booking. You will usually find that 15–25 question types make up most of the volume. Those are your bot's first job.

Ground the bot in your content

A chatbot should answer from your information, not from the internet. We use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): the bot looks up your price list, policies and FAQs, then writes the answer. This keeps replies accurate and lets you update answers by editing a document rather than retraining anything.

Design for script mixing

  • Accept Devanagari, Roman Hindi and English in the same conversation.
  • Reply in the customer's style — if they write Hinglish, a simple Hinglish reply feels natural.
  • Keep numbers, prices and dates in digits so they are unambiguous.
  • Test with spelling variations: "kitne", "kitna", "ktna".

Know when to hand over

The bot should pass the chat to a human for complaints, payment problems or anything it is unsure about. A good handover shares the full chat history so the customer never repeats themselves.

Measure what matters

Track resolution rate (chats closed without an agent), lead capture rate and customer ratings. Review a sample of conversations every week and add missing answers to the knowledge base.

FAQs

Which AI model is best for Hindi?

Leading models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all handle Hindi well. We test two or three on your own chat samples before choosing.

Can the chatbot speak other Indian languages?

Yes. Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati and Kannada are supported to varying degrees; we test accuracy before going live.

Will the bot make up answers?

Grounding it in your content and instructing it to admit when it does not know greatly reduces this risk.
